In repsonse to aatombomb’s and approachingsignificance’s post about Troy Davis, I propose we DO SOMETHING about it that takes 30 seconds.

We’ve all seen Tumblr do some amazing things ranging from donating thousands of dollars to friends in need, raising tens of thousands for countries who faced disaster to finding a place for friends to live, finding them a job or just giving moral support everyday. I’m not asking for money, but how about signing a petition that may save an innocent man from the death penalty?

Davis was convicted almost exclusively on the basis of eyewitness identification testimony, which has been shown through DNA exonerations and thousands of academic studies to be unreliable. Seven of the nine witnesses who testified at his trial have since recanted and strong evidence points to another person as the real perpetrator in the case.

The only man that can stop the execution scheduled for tonight, September 21 at 7pm, is GA District Attorney Chisolm and he needs to hear from us asap. And so does Mr. Davis.

Signal boost, part 2.

The Troy Davis story is very tragic. I hope that there is a stay on his execution. We don’t often get political on this blog but the death penalty is a broken system and this may be the clearest example of that.

This is not a chain letter. This is real. It comes down to the moral question for myself about whether you would let 100 guilty men go free as long as 1 innocent man isn’t convicted? It seems that some people down in Georgia are ignoring evidence for a different agenda and it saddens me.

Also, please find the time to read David Grann’s brilliant piece, “Trail by Fire: Did Texas Kill an Innocent Man?” to get another perspective on a different case involving the state-sponsored death of a possibly innocent man.
