My mom and sisters walked into a fudge shop. They found some sample hand lotion and put some on. As they were rubbing it into their hands, the fudge shop employee mistakenly assumed that they were rubbing their hands in anticipation and said “aw, you guys are really excited for fudge!” And they looked at her and were like… “yeeeahhhhh.”

Might be a bit of a common one but I loved her in The Big Lebowski. Watching her in that role really helped prepare me for pretentious art school douches. She also had a bit of self-awareness to her, which I came to admire especially after seeing a lack of that amongst my peers.

After Arrested Development returns, will it be devoid of its fanaticism? Will its inside joke quality, however illusory it currently is, vanish? Because with most memes, once you acknowledge it, and take its grassroots away, you remove its appeal.

When a meme is acknowledged by the greater world around it, the internet feels the meme has been robbed of any coolness or inside-jokey-ness it once had. You don’t want to be in on a joke if your parents know about it.

Think about planking or “Gangnam Style” Halloween costumes. Once the inside joke goes IRL, it gets kind of annoying right?

Television shows aren’t memes. The reason why people hate seeing Rage Faces on T-Shirts at Hot Topic isn’t because it, like, totally killed the joke. It’s because memes are meant to be sloppily made, passed around, and discarded. They are funny almost just because of how inconsequential they are. Using the phrase “IRL” to me always means a slightly awkward version of something that exists in its purest state online. Arrested Development was a network television show.

I have concerns about the new Arrested Development because of 1) high expectations 2) the fact that the cast had to record scenes separately (and on green screen), and 3) because season 3 was the Human After All of Arrested Development seasons. (ed note: Check out that trendy pop-culture reference cross-pollination, dawg). I am not at all concerned about this ruining the way I joke about the show within an internet community. If anything, the endless hitpieces and infographics and breakdowns have just made following this show more exhausting and yet still, somehow, reductive.

If the new season sucks, it will be the endless hype from everyone that makes it feel bloated and too event-y. It won’t be because my parents think it’s cool. (ed note: my parents do think it’s cool because I made them watch this show 7 years ago.) In other words, the internet will ruin the show, the show won’t ruin the internet.

If you need really screencapped gifsets to enjoy television, either shape up, or ship up.

There’s really no need to keep fighting about whether GIF is pronounced with a hard G or soft G. For me and the other kids who have been messing around with web graphics since before Photoshop handled animation and everything was done in Adobe Imageready, we will just know that you are someone who is weirdly emphatic about the pronunciation of something that you have only been familiarizing yourself with for the last 4 or 5 years.

Let forget about the fact that the founders of the format have always been on record saying it with a soft G. Really, there’s no need to apologize. There’s largely no reason to challenge you when you say “because that’s how its spelled.” I would wage a gigantic bet that you’re so vigilant about the logic of the spelling of G words that your “Jif” allergy is not so much due to your strict ideologies, but more that your lack of gentleness and inability to handle it gingerly speak more to you feeling like you are on the fringe of an internet community and that you want to prove that you are very engaged and diligent when it comes to the internet and images associated with it.

But that’s fine.
